    A Long Waited Arrival...

For people who do not know the person in the portrait I used for my blog, that is Desmond Richardson, one of a few idols of mine. I have been in love of his dancing for years, though I have not had the chance to see him performing on stage in person. Desmond, as a legend in the dancing world, is most versatile dance master in various dancing category, such as contemporary, folk dance, ballet and Jazz. His amazing work included extraordinary performance with Tan Yuan-yuan and SF Ballet a decade ago in Shakespeare’s classics <Othello>. Nobody ever achieved his height in classic ballet without having traditional ballet training. His unique modern ballet coupled with Tan Yuan-yuan’s textbook precision creates the mysterious magic in that masterpiece.

The saddest of being an audience is to see the legend fading away from the stage, until a moment we forgot him. Like Jock Soto, used to be awarded so many times, portrait by Andy Warhol, had retired from the New York Ballet Theatre and now co-owned a catering business with his lover in Manhattan. Desmond, although reduced his stage appearance, has not announced retirement. It is a placebo, perhaps, more or less, for the illness of his fans. I was a little surprised that I could not hear anything more about Desmond in the TV show "you think you can dance". In dance world, you just could not avoid his name. Well, little by little, I still can see his shadow. Two seasons earlier, one contestant mentioned his dance idol is Desmond Richardson. Two weeks ago we heard from Mia Michael commenting Will's contemporary piece "Will, you remind me of Desmond Richardson", which obviously highly touched Will. And last night, it become true that Desmond finally agree to choreograph a Pas de Deux piece for Will and Katee, two of best technique dancers this season, using David Archuleta's song "imagine". Everything is right, the music, the dancers, the technique, the thrill of the subtle movements, even the perfect little mistake they had in the middle. Desmond was introduced unusually high profiled by producer though he did not speak any words on TV. In rehearsal video it was mostly his partner (his lover) Dwight commenting while he is doing the posing. I can tell he is a very low-key artist, with a beautiful face and body still, at age of 40 at least (no official record of his age what so ever).

If I say I love Mia Michaels choreography, I can die for Desmond’s dancing; his lines, strength and mobility, not even mentioned the sheer enjoyment of his beautiful body. Will is my favorite dancer in this season. His strong technique and beautiful interpretation of choreography outperformed every other boy. Although a little short (no long legs) without question his nice personality and humble attitude even surpassed the last season's Danny, in my eyes.
